Why it gets missed

One bite is rarely one infection.

Studies of ticks in endemic areas routinely find multiple pathogens in a single tick. Yet standard workups test for one organism, with one imperfect test, once.

Co-infections also change how Lyme itself behaves — protocols that ignore Babesia or Bartonella stall, plateau, or relapse. It's one of the most common reasons patients arrive here after treatment “didn't work.”
